This course leads students to learn what is needed(eg. learning foreign languages such as Chinese). Students are introduced to prepare for Buddhist Studies.

Rituals express dimensions of inner qualities of monks and nuns in the Buddhist community. Rituals help create community and mutual support and share our common values. Prospective monks and nuns are expected to learn and Practise types of Buddhist Rituals as follows: Going for Refuge, Offering Homage to the Buddha, Reciting Sutras, Remembering the Buddha, Prayers and so on.

The origin, development, and decline of Indian Buddhism ; historical outline of general Indian Buddhism : to focus on easy and exact understanding of Indian Buddhism that is origin of Buddhism.

Established with the origins of Buddhism, Buddhist culture has evolved to cover not only liturgical rites but also the comprehensive lifestyle(clothing, food, and housing) within the Sangha(Buddhist community). This course investigates the intergenerational transmission of Buddhist cultural codes. Students will analyze specific sets of Buddhist imagery—comprising shared philosophies, values, symbols, and rituals—to understand the distinct cultural identity of Buddhism.

“Buddha” signifies both the historical Shakyamuni and the archetypal forms of practice and soteriology. This course analyzes the Jataka tales for their depiction of karmic cultivation, and the Agama texts for their portrayal of edification through the Dharma. By exploring the narratives within the hagiography of the Buddha, students will study methodologies for adapting traditional motifs into modern storytelling formats.

It is a special course for the members of the Sangha (Buddhist Community of monks and nuns) of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It aims at enabling the students to critically understand the teachings of Buddhism and to promote the intellectual skills necessary for the propagation of Buddhism such as reading, writing and constructive thinking, etc.

Historically, East Asian Buddhism transcended textual study by utilizing Byeonsang(Transformation Tableaux) and Byeonmun(Transformation Texts) as vehicles to disseminate scriptural contents to a wider audience. This course investigates how these visual and narrative forms embody the East Asian Buddhist worldview and cultural imagination. Students will ultimately develop methodologies to generate contemporary adaptations of these traditional forms, applying modern creativity to complete original storytelling projects.

With a general surveying on the history of Chinese Buddhism from the age of early transmission of Indian Buddhism to the age of modern Buddhist studies, we will translate and explain the meaning of some of Chinese Buddhist scriptures of each age.

This course is offered due to the plan for particularization of culture and cultural contents in the Buddhist Studies department. In terms of understanding of culture and cultural contents, field work of Buddhist cultural and historical sites is no less necessary than the theological studies. This course aims at cultivating the comprehension of transformation of Buddhist history and culture by investigating the Buddhist cultural and historical sites in Gyeongju. This course also helps student to improve capabilities of particularization in the filed of culture and cultural contents of students. This course will be divided into two parts. In classroom, students will take the theological classes about the Buddhist history, culture and application of cultural contents. And the contents of theological classes will be examined by the field work in Buddhist historical sites in Gyeongju. Then, this class provides the comprehension of the aspects of acculturation coupled with Buddhist thoughts, culture and history.

Buddhism has played a pivotal role in shaping and evolving Korean tradition. In the realm of contemporary K-Culture, Buddhist thought and cultural elements remain essential motifs. This course analyzes Buddhist narrative content as a fundamental constituent of K-Culture, exploring various applications and case studies. Students will develop professional competencies in excavating and utilizing cultural resources to create compelling K-Culture content.

The temple is the core space of Buddhism. The history of the temple and the space of the temple contain various stories. In this class, you learn the ability to learn and utilize the story contents contained in the temple space as the main subject of Buddhist cultural contents.

Korean Buddhism is distinguished from other traditions of Buddhism. A variety of information on Korean Buddhism is to be presented with pictures if possible. However, the focus will be on Jogye Order, the biggest Buddhist order in Korea.

The course will deal with major aspects of Mahayana Buddhism lecturing on background of arising of Mahayana Buddhism major texts including commentarial literatures. Mahayana Buddhism is to be compared with early Buddhism and Abhidharma Buddhism. Major doctrines. such as idea of Bodhisattva will be explained.

This course provides a comprehensive examination of the processes through which Buddhist scriptures were orally preserved, transmitted, organized, translated, and canonized, covering the formation of Nikāya/Āgama collections, Abhidharma and Mahāyāna literature, major Buddhist canons, manuscript discoveries, and modern textual-critical methodologies in order to illuminate the historical, cultural, and doctrinal conditions that shaped the Buddhist literary tradition.

ESG defines a strategic framework for sustainability. In Buddhist doctrine, the principle of symbiosis is inherent in the concepts of Individual Action(Sa-eop) and Collective Karma(Gong-eop), mirroring the core objectives of modern ESG strategies. This course explores the convergence of ESG values—emerging as a new paradigm for sustainable living—and Buddhism as a humanistic religion. Students will examine management models that integrate these perspectives, applicable to diverse entities ranging from temples to enterprises.

Locational conditions for Buddhist temples are applied differentially according to historical and geographical contexts. Ancient temples were situated in varied settings, such as within or outside royal precincts and along transit nodes, with mountain monasteries forming in accordance with regional topography. This course investigates the external determinants—including social structures—that shaped these locational trends. By analyzing the historical and sociological contexts of site selection alongside physical structure, students will comprehend the spatial distribution of temple groups throughout history.

This course is offered due to the plan for particularization of culture and cultural contents in the Buddhist Studies department. It is necessary to understand the history of interchange of Buddhism and Buddhist culture for improving capabilities of particularization in the filed of culture and cultural contents. This class explores the spread of Buddhism in East Asia through Central Asia and Southeast Asia and the growth process of Buddhism as major religious culture in Southeast Asia and East Asia. It also examines the process of acculturation of various cultural elements in Buddhism through the interaction between and within areas and localization of Buddhism through the bilateral exchanges between Buddhism and local culture. Thus, this class will provide the general understanding of the history of Buddhist cultural exchange and basic characteristics of Buddhist thoughts and culture.

Mādhyamika Philosophy was created by Nāgārjuna who have been called as the father of Mahāyāna Buddhism. We will study on the Emptiness philosophy of Nāgārjuna based on his treatise Madhyamaka Kārikā. Then we will study on the background, birth and development of Mādhyamika Philosophy. At the end of this lecture we will study on Sān-lūn thought that was established in China after translating the Madhyamaka treatises.

This class provides the basis for understanding and utilizing K-food and traditional Korean temple food, which are one of the main elements of Korean culture. This class introduces the characteristics and background of K-food, the characteristics of traditional Korean temple food, its formation background, and history. In addition, understand and utilize cultural contents using temple food.

In this lecture we will study on Vijñaptimātra thought. Vijñaptimātra thought is not only an Epistemology but also a theory of Mahāyāna practice. At first we will review the world view of Vijñaptimātra thought, and then introduce some important scriptures and treatises. Based on these studies we will compare the Vijñaptimātra thought with Western Philosophies.

This course aims to understand the Buddhist cultural heritage of the World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO at the present time by regions or periods. We investigate how the world Buddhist cultural heritage is preserved and utilized. Focusing on Korean Buddhist cultural heritage. we will explore Buddhist cultural assets in Korea that can be listed on UNESCO in the future.

This course deals with cultivation the ability of planning Buddhist cultural contents and learning the methodology of actual application based on the study on the change of Buddhist cultural contents and its application in Buddhist history. It also aims at establishing theoretical background through the function of Buddhist thought and culture in history and developing the ability of planning Buddhist cultural contents to the society.

This course investigates the historical formation, institutional development, organizational structure, disciplinary systems, and socio-political functions of the Buddhist monastic order by analyzing the evolution of Vinaya traditions, ordination systems, gendered monastic communities, economic bases, and the dynamic interactions between the saṅgha, state authorities, and local societies across India, Central Asia, and East Asia.

In Tiān-Tai treatises we can find not only it's ontology but also it's practice technique. It was constructed based on the teachings of Saddharma-puṇḍarīka Sūtra. We will study on Zhì-yǐ's holistic attitude and his critical classification of Buddhist doctrines.

Serving as the central locus for cultivation, culture, devotion, and liturgy, Buddhist temples function as institutions of immense complexity. Their operational roles have been historically critical, influencing not only the internal Sangha but also the sociopolitical and economic landscapes of their host societies. This course investigates the historical trajectory of temple administration and its functional shifts. Students will analyze these historical precedents to envision new paradigms for the future management of Buddhist temples. This course offers a detailed historical study of how Buddhist temples in India, China, Korea, and Japan have been administered, financed, and socially embedded by examining temple land systems, economic operations, administrative hierarchies, ritual functions, legal regulations, and their transformations over time, thereby providing the conceptual and historical grounding necessary for understanding contemporary temple management and cultural heritage practices.

Korean Buddhism serves as a vast repository of traditional cultural assets, including thought, history, and arts. In the modern era, the translation of these assets into digital media is a prerequisite for broader engagement and application. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the digital adaptation process. By engaging in practical digital creation exercises, students will acquire the skills to produce original digital content derived from Buddhist motifs.

Seon practice stands as a cornerstone of the Korean Buddhist tradition. This course investigates the theoretical framework of Seon and its concrete methods of cultivation. Students will explore strategies to adapt this traditional discipline for modern daily living. Designed to encompass both theory and praxis, the course provides comprehensive training in various Seon meditation programs and their implementation.

Designed to adapt Buddhist storytelling for mass communication, this course focuses on media development through co-production with industry experts. Students will collaborate with professionals in broadcasting and journalism to acquire hands-on skills in media planning and production. The seminar provides a platform for creating original media content that effectively disseminates Buddhist culture to a wider audience.

Unlike general organizations, temple management has the distinctiveness of cultural management. This class demonstrates the fundamental characteristics of temple management as cultural management. Additionally, by examining the success and failure cases of temple management, it was designed to understand more pertinent temple management methodologies. This provides a framework for understanding temples as a cultural management platform.

This course offers an in-depth investigation into the conceptual and philosophical evolution of the Tathāgata—from its early Buddhist foundations to its mature articulation in Mahāyāna traditions—by examining doctrines such as Tathāgatagarbha, Buddha-nature, and the Dharmakāya, and by comparatively analyzing Indian and East Asian interpretive frameworks through rigorous textual, historical, and doctrinal methodologies.

This subject is about understanding the overall matters related to the museum exhibition planning of Buddhist relics and acquiring the basic process of exhibition planning. Since Buddhist cultural heritage accounts for a very high proportion of Korean traditional cultural heritage, exhibition planning of Buddhist cultural heritage is also numerous. Through this subject, basic contents to be considered in the exhibition and planning of Buddhist cultural heritage are acquired.
